Mid-Autumn Festival is on September 17th this year! Below are a few fun ways to bring your family closer together and celebrate the holiday.
1. Read Mid-Autumn Festival Books
There are some great kids books out there covering Mid-Autumn Festival. One of our favorites is an English book that includes three different festive stories titled “Mooncakes” by Loretta Seto. Find other English and Cantonese Mid-Autumn Festival books on our CAA Amazon book list.
2. Buy or Make Your Own Mooncake
Mooncakes and Mid-Autumn Festival are almost synonymous. Funny enough, people search for “how do we celebrate mooncake festival” just as much as “how do we celebrate mid-autumn festival”. Mooncakes, or 月餅, are chewy pastries typically made with lotus seed paste and salted egg yolks. There are many other variants on the market made from nuts, fruits, and some even frozen with creamy centers. My favorite is from Wing Wah with their rich and oily yolks, paired with a deliciously golden tea to balance.
3. Decorate for the Holiday
If you haven’t heard about Baisun Candles, now is the time. Not only do they have nostalgic scents that are reminiscent of our Cantonese culture, they also have beautiful mooncake candles that will light up your home. Another way to bring some festive flair to your home or yard for Mid-Autumn Festival is paper lanterns. Check out these autumn-themed lanterns that you can repurpose for fall!
4. Learn Through Play
What better way to educate kids than through play? Bitty Bao has the cutest wooden mooncake toy set. And if you have older kids, you may want to consider pitching into this Kickstarter for “Moon Bunny“, a boardgame inspired by Mid-Autumn Festival folklore.
5. Attend Our 1st CAA Meetup!
Join us on Saturday, September 14th at 4-6pm for our first Cantonese American Association Meetup to celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival! It will be held at Arthur Lewis Park, Green Brook Township, NJ which offers amazing playgrounds for all ages. Show up to connect, play, join Canto story time, make paper lanterns, and share some mooncake together. For more info, visit our Mid-Autumn Festival details page or follow the Facebook Events page.’
Hope to see you at our first meetup and 中秋節快樂!
